Pastor's Notes - May - June 2014

Posted by on in Pastor's Notes
The “Peanuts” cartoon strips often tell the message of the Gospel in a different way than we typically hear it.  The celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus is behind us as we start the summer season of the year.  It is pretty easy, as we get into the routine of summer to lose sight of the meaning of the resurrection of Christ in everyday life.       But one thing is certain-our problems, our hurts, our loneliness, and whatever other things trouble us do not stop just because summer is here.  In fact sometimes they intensify during the summer.  Thinking of...

Pastor's Notes - April 2014

What could I possibly write about this month other than about resurrection?  It is the month this year when we celebrate the bodily resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.  There has not been a time in my life when I did not believe whole-heartedly in the bodily resurrection of Jesus.  However, that still doesn’t mean that it makes sense in my mind.  The bodily resurrection will be for me, as long as I live, a truth that is believed solely by faith.        Bodily resurrection will never be proven as even a possibility in a scientific laboratory.  And no one...

Pastor's Notes - March 2014

By the time you all read this, it will nearly be Lent.  This year we are going to study intensely the stories of Joseph and Moses in the Old Testament.  We will begin in Genesis chapter 37 with the story of Joseph.  We will go through the rest of Genesis and the first 14 chapters of Exodus.       These 2 stories cover nearly 500 years of the history of God’s chosen people that ends with their Exodus from Egypt across the Red Sea.  The powerful work of God that ended the 430 years of captivity in Egypt is the Passover,...

Pastor's Notes - November 2013

Pastor Notes-November I feel it necessary to write this week about one of the 6 “Chief parts of the Catechism”, the “Office of the Keys”.  You all learned this from your confirmation days but it is a teachings we need to be refreshed on periodically, because it affects our life nearly every day.              According to the Catechism the office of the Keys is: “the peculiar Church power which Christ has given to His Church on earth to forgive the sins of penitent sinners, but to retain the sins of the impenitent as long as they do not repent.”             We...

Luke 2:1 Now it came about in those days that a decree went out from CaesarAugustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. 2 Thiswas the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3And all were proceeding to register for the census, everyone to his own city. 4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, tothe city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house andfamily of David, 5 in order to register, along with Mary, who wasengaged to him, and was with child. 6 And...

Pastors Notes - October 2013

(Sometimes you just have to have a laugh.)  My great-grandmother always said there was Indian blood in the family, and my long-standing barbering desire proved her right.  For years I had suggested to my husband, Roger, that he let me cut his hair.  I used all the arguments I could think of: “You could avoid all those special trips into town.  There would be no long wait.  Think of the money you would save!” Nothing worked.  Then the price of haircuts rose, and Roger finally consented to let me at him.  Before he changed his mind I rushed out and bought...

Pastor's Notes - September 2013

I have a book entitled “We had everything but money”.  It is filled with stories of people who endured the Great Depression.  We have probably all heard stories from or about our own relatives who lived through these days.  The stories I have heard from my relatives make me ask the question: “How in the world did they ever do it?”             Many people went from being millionaires one minute to the next being nothing-aires.  The first chapter is entitled: “When the banks closed, our hearts opened.”  That says a lot; people lost material possessions, sometimes all material possessions; but many...

Pastors Notes - February 2014

What does it mean to say: "I believe in Jesus Christ?"  We use that term sometimes very carelessly.  Is it as simple as accepting as truth a person named Jesus who lived, died, and rose again years ago?   To simply believe that He was born in Behtlehem, lived and ministered among men for 33 years, then died a dreadful death on a cruel Roman cross in not believing, in the Spiritual understanding of the word.  Millions of Muslims believe these things about Jesus, yet they are not saved.   Jesus Himself had a lot of trouble getting peopleto really believe, even His...

……And we swam in the ocean, and played on the beach   And we fished and went to the ‘musement’ and LOTSA Stuff!  How was YOUR vacation?   Pastor Notes July & August   Jesus died to take away my sins. If the Son sets you free you will be free indeed! The wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. For by grace you are saved through faith and that not of yourselves; it is a gift of God lest any man should boast. For God so loved the world...
