Our History

St. John’s Lutheran Church is rich in area history.  During the mid-1800’s many families immigrated to the United States from Europe and then migrated west along the Oregon Trail.  Many of the families that settled in southern Nebraska had found their way from Germany and brought with them their fundamental Christian beliefs in the form of Lutheranism.   As their numbers grew the need to establish formal places of worship increased and in 1885 several families from the area officially chartered, formed and built what was known as the German Evangelical Church and located it on donated farmland about 6 miles south of the present Village of Wilcox.  This original church was destroyed by a tornado in 1901 and was rebuilt and renamed St. John’s at that time.   Worship services were spoken in German until the mid-1950’s when English was slowly integrated into the worship service.

In 1902 St. John’s created a Christian School which operated until 1937 when severe economic times as a result of the Great Depression forced the closing of the school.

1955 was a landmark year for St. Johns, the town of Wilcox had grown and it was decided to physically move St. John’s from its location south of Wilcox into town to the property where it is currently located.  A large portion of the church today is made up from the original church that was moved.

St. John’s maintains a beautiful cemetery at the original church site, 6 miles south of Wilcox.  Our church members perpetuate the care of the cemetery.

Over the years St. John’s has been blessed with many different Pastors who have all contributed to our growth.  St. John’s continues to grow its church family every year and we hope that you will become part of our ongoing history.
